“Art Nouveau flourished in a number of
European countries” including like France, Britain, Spain and Austria, they also
have their own names for the style. But for Germany the named that they use for
this style is ‘Jugendstil’. The name Jugendstil was derived from the Munich
magazine which featured Art Nouveau designs
.
Searching through
Trademe I’ve found this German Art Nouveau style candle holder which doesn’t
have information of the creator and date on it, but it would have been made
between 1800s and 1910s.
A candle
holder is an object that is “part of everyday life”. As you can see from the
pictures there are curving lines all around the candle holder which shows us that
it’s an Art Nouveau style object. “Although
curving lines characterize Art Nouveau” The whole candle holder is full of curving
designs, like the middle of the holder; it looks like a shape of a flower pot
which it indicates flowers. Some of the designs from this style have like organic
or flowers on them so the shape that looks like a flower pot on the holder symbolizes that.
Art Nouveau designs have organic/plants
on the object, on the bottom of the candle holder there are a few like organic/plant
bits on their which I think its suppose to create beauty and harmony to the
object along with the curve lines. “Art Nouveau style
are flat, decorative patterns, intertwined organic forms of stems or flowers”, “Organic and dynamic forms”.
In my opinion I think the seller could of included a bit more information about this object like the date of it and the material that it was made out of.
