Blog 2: Research Statement and Annotated Bibliography

Research subject: French Rococo is an 18th century artistic movement and style which affected several aspects of the arts.

1. The book is about an exhibition that was held at the National design museum in March 2008 which called the continuing curve, 1730-2008. It explores the Rococo styles and its continuing revivals up to the present day in multiple fields, including furniture, decorative arts, textiles, prints, and drawings. I might learn something new about Rococo design by reading this source. Coffin, Sarah. (2008). Rococo: The continuing curve. New York, NY.

2. The journal article shows us a few of the French rococo designs and on each one it gives us a little description about it and who was the person who designed it. The article could be useful because we might see these designs in our course and we can learn about them with this article. Gimelson, Deborah. (date unknown). French Rococo Decorative Arts. The Magazine Antiques; (1990); 137, 3; ProQuest Central. 3.

3. The edited book has information on the creation of the rococo that’s involve with Louis XV and, it has an introduction page that talks about rococo with Germany and France. The source has enough information about creating the rococo and about Louis XV so it will be useful. Kimball, Fiske. (1943). The creation of the Rococo. Philadelphia museum of art.

4. The website has a few images of French Rococo style furniture and a description about them. There are information talking about the influences on Rococo, Rococo furniture makers and end of Rococo design. I can learn about Rococo furniture from this website and understand more about the influence on Rococo. Furniture Styles. (2004). Retrieved from http://www.furniturestyles.net/european/french/rococo.html

5. The image is a French Rocco design, the name of it is “Embarkation for the Island of Cythera” which was by Antoine Watteau in 1717. The colours that have been used and the water stream in this picture tell us that French Rococo designs have water themes in them. The image tells me and helps me remember what French Rococo designs look like.

DSDN 101 P.1 Ex 6: Individual work

Precedent Image

The technique that I’ve chosen is Axonometric Projection which looks pretty similar to Planometric projection. I used this technique for my mobile phone, by using this technique you can see the front, left and bottom view of the phone, the only views that you can’t see is the top and right. This technique inspired me because it’s in 45 degrees angle so you can see most of the parts and details of the object, and you can measure the lengths and widths of it as well, I like Axonometric because it's a simple drawing and people can look at the object real clearly.

Blog 1:Design persona

I’m Jackie Liu I finished my last year of high school at Paraparaumu College, I’m currently still living at home in Paraparaumu and working part time for my parents at their restaurant. My hobbies are riding my Bmx and going on road trips with friends.

Back in high school I took the subject Graphic Design from the start of third form throughout to seventh form, I was real into designing something new and being creative for every assignment that we were given. When I was finishing my last year of high school off I thought I might take design even further because I really enjoyed it and design was one of my favourite subjects, so that’s the reason why I choose to come study at Victoria’s school of design.

My goal for now is to become an industrial designer when I finish my bachelor’s degree at Victoria, but I’ve also considered to extend out and try complete my studies with a masters degree for industrial design, but who knows what I’ll be doing in about four years, as my goals could change.
One of my inspirations will have to be one of my good mates who’s also studying industrial design, although he studies at Massey University. He has told me all about the industrial design course and what it involves, so I thought that since I had a large interest in graphics and metal work in high school, the industrial design course will be the perfect course for me to grow and study on. Another inspiration would be my graphics teacher from high school because as she was real supportive for my choice of picking this design course; she helped me out a lot on my assignments so I can get enough credits to be able to do this course.
